Prize selection criteria

Rio Tinto partners with the IBLF to facilitate an inclusive, rigorous and transparent management process. IBLF engages independent sustainability experts from around the world to ensure the process and decisions are made in a fair, objective and consistent manner. The Panel considers each short listed organisation's submission to determine if the organisation and submitted proposal:

  • Progresses the principles of sustainability (environmental, social and economic) and demonstrates tangible impact in addressing, achieving and further advancing at least two or more of the sustainability principles.
  • Meets and/or addresses specific development needs (such as health, education, access to water etc).
  • Values innovation and collaboration as a path to sustainability.
  • Demonstrates replicability (providing solutions for sustainability) and scalability (measurable impact achieved with existing resources).
  • Creates opportunities for not-for-profit, civil society and non-government organisations to secure additional funds and resources.
  • Considers the sustainability of both the organisation and the submitted proposal over the long term.
  • Demonstrates the corporate governance standards required to effectively manage significant financial resources.
