Who we are
About Rio Tinto
Rio Tinto's business is finding, mining and processing the earth's mineral resources. Major products are aluminium, copper, diamonds, energy (coal and uranium), gold, industrial minerals (borax, titanium dioxide, salt, talc) and iron ore. Activities span the world but are strongly represented in Australia and North America, with significant businesses also located in South America, Asia, Europe and southern Africa.
Mining is a long term, capital intensive business, where many assets are situated in remote locations and can last for 30 years or more. The extended timescale means that if Rio Tinto is to deliver financial returns to shareholders, host governments and local communities, we need economic, environmental and social stability and strong governance.
Sustainable development considerations are integrated into all aspects of Rio Tinto's business through a number of policies, standards, strategies and performance indicators. Being recognised for our responsible approach assists us in gaining improved access to land, people and capital - three critical resources for the ongoing success of our business.
